elf, christmas, christmas socks

Down with Santa, Elves Rule the World

I’m here to talk about something different this Christmas.

I’m not going to give any more press to Santa or that Red Nosed Reindeer. I’m not here to talk about whether you have been naughty or nice. I really don’t want to know the answer to that question. I’m here to talk about those vertically challenged people, the elves.

Let’s face it, they are the ones that make it all happen!

Santa might be the showman, but the elves do all the hard yards. At clear decisions, we consider ourselves “elf-like” and it’s not just because we are short. We manage projects, we look for improvements, we make change happen, we capture corporate knowledge and we know how to get the best out of any situation. All that we know, we can trace back to elves.

So here is what we have learnt:

Elves know how their stockings are stuffed

They know their roles, and share this knowledge. Their work doesn’t stop if someone goes on leave or is away sick. What does this tell us? They know their business processes and they have their succession plan sorted. The way that they “do things around here” is no doubt written down somewhere.

Elves run Christmas like the project it is

They know how to project manage, they count the days, divide up the tasks and work as a team. They love their work and they meet that deadline with fantastic results year after year. Who else can keep millions and millions of children happy? By far the most difficult customers in the world!

Elves know change is not a dirty word

They have adapted to survive, thinking about all those technological changes they have seen, and year after year they make it happen. As Winston Churchill once said, “Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential”.

Elves jump for joy

They work hard and thrive on doing a job well to deliver results. Why is that you ask? Because they are happy staff – they know their jobs, the direction they are heading and are able to improve the way things work, rather than just accepting how it is. All of this not only equals a productive workplace, but a successful one! What more could you ask from an organisation?

Elves have a strategic plan

In January each year, they most likely sit down and think about what they did, how they did it and what they could do better the next time. But most of all they think about the part they played in Christmas and what it means to the greater good of Santa’s world.

So this year at Christmas, we at clear decisions encourage you to ignore the big guy in red!

Think about your business. How could you improve it and what would you do differently? What is the change you want to see in your business? And how will you manage that change? Ask yourself –  what would I do if I was an elf?

At the start of my career, I learned quickly that many organisations were full of good intentions, but all too often lacking the skills and know-how to execute effectively. That’s why I founded clear decisions™ over 12 years ago. My vision was simple, I had a desire to help businesses and their people move through change projects with great success.
